The Boy Who Drew Monsters by Keith Donahue

January 25, 2017 Charla Review - Submitted

I decided to try eStories.com for a free audiobook download.  I found the membership allows me to choose from over 80,000 bestselling titles with new releases.  For my free audiobook trial, I selected The Boy Who Drew Monsters by Keith Donahue.

Absolutely riveting!  Jack is a gifted young artist with Asperger’s with a deathly fear of the outside.  Trapped in his home by his deep fear, he struggles to keep himself safe from the noises on the outside and the monsters that want in – they want him!  As strong as his fear is, he is also harboring a secret that is tearing him apart – a secret with a responsibility that no one can comprehend.  Although he must put an end to the secret, it could be deadly to those around him.   No one knows what happened three years ago, but Jack does!  That’s when it all started … the evil … the fears … the noises.

His unsuspecting friends and family are captive to the same monsters; they just don’t know it yet.  A supernatural tale with a psychological twist or two.

Donahue takes heartbreak, fear, and childhood nightmares twisting them into dark, evils that lurk just outside the edge of reality.  It is a book that will haunt you from day one.  Donahue is a wordsmith that vividly paints with words in dramatic detail drawing the listener in and putting them through the same fears.

The narrator, Bronson Pinchot was excellent.  He spoke clearly and became each of the characters.  His performance was pitch perfect and captivating with his strong yet soothing voice.  I thoroughly enjoy listening Bronson Pinchot’s performances.    He never disappoints!

The audio production was excellent; I had no issues.

WordsAPlenty rates The Boy Who Drew Monsters with a 4.5 star rating for exciting, creative and captivating.

Double Down & Dirty: A Doms of The Covenant Short Story by Samantha A. Cole

January 19, 2017 Charla Review - Submitted

The book Double Down & Dirty: A Doms of the Covenant Short Story written by Samantha A. Cole will be published on January 20, 2017.  However, WordsAPlenty (Charla White) was given an ARC for an honest review based on my opinion.

Double Down & Dirty: A Doms of The Covenant Short Story written by Samantha Cole is phenomenal!  Twin millionaires, Grayson and Remington Mann are owners of Black Diamond Records.  They have a lot in common – they share everything: the same birthday, the same house, the same business, and the same women. They are also very popular and well versed in the BDSM lifestyle.
Abigail Turner is their personal assistant.  She fantasizes about them, they fantasize about her but employees are off limits, especially one as talented as Abigail!  That is until the twins make an outstanding and shocking discovery that has them coming to blows and Abigail quaking in her shoes.
Now the fun really starts and Cole works her magic.  The seduction is slow and sweet sending tingles down the reader’s spine … romantic and intriguing.  Cole’s books are much more than romance, it is about respect, friendships, family and being ethical and moral.
Her characters are strong and yes, sexy in their own way.  Her female characters are not drop dead gorgeous models but are rather modeled around real people – they have the same struggles and doubts shared by many of her readers – image, emotional misconceptions of ourselves.  The men are strong and she demonstrates that chivalry is NOT dead.  They are strong but respect women.
Cole’s books show a depth to her characters and story lines that are growing with each book she writes.  Cole’s growth as a story teller and writer has been amazing to watch unfold moving from the simple to more complex story lines adding in more characters and growing the Trident/Covenant world.
Cole’s dialog is realistic as is her story lines from the BDSM piece to the mystery and romance pieces.  She writes with enthusiasm yet does so tastefully.   As an avid reader, I have enjoyed reading Cole’s series.  My first and last thought was, “WOW! Uh, Samantha Cole – when’s the next one coming out?”
WordsAPlenty awards this book with a strong 5-star rating for the continued growth of the series and author as well as being both action packed and extremely well written.
Available for purchase at Amazon on January 20, 2017.

Role Reversal: How to Take Care of Yourself and Your Aging Parents by Iris Waichler, MSW, LCSW

January 13, 2017 Charla Review - Submitted

I obtained a copy of Role Reversal: How to Take Care of Yourself and Your Aging Parents by Iris Waichler, MSW, LCSW.  The following review is based on my opinion after having read the book.

This is a very comprehensive guidebook that will help steer you through the most tenuous of feelings and circumstances you might encounter in being the caregiver to your aging parents.  Waichler uses her own voice and experiences to relay to her audience what to expect physically, mentally and emotionally.  She provides coping mechanisms and sound advice.

“Still none of this seemed real to me.  How could he be gone?  I realized that from this moment on, the decisions being made would be ours only – my siblings’ and mine.  Dad’s voice was gone.”

When a parent passes, one realizes many things they must deal with daily – the grief, anger and fear of not having that parent around for advice, words of wisdom or anything else.  Not only does one have to make decisions and have intimate knowledge of your parents’ wishes but also of their past.  This will ultimately help you understand the why of their actions.

“And then I heard dad say in the background, “I think we should tell Iris what’s going on.”  Having to deal with parents who want to protect you until their dying breath is a common occurrence that often times leaves the child even angrier and more hurt.  But this is important to recognize, parents are like this!

Although I never saw much of what my own parents went through caring for their parents, the parts I did see and know about were outlined in this book – things to expect when caring for a parent or other loved one, daily challenges, and so much more.  Now that my mother is coming to live with me and my husband, I am delighted to have read this book.  It came at a very opportune and important time.  I have already come to realize that when mom has been angry with me it is because I took her power away and treated her not as the adult she is but rather as a small child.  Waichler clearly explains that it is important that they “save face.”

Waichler describes her journey and experiences clearly and with emotional depth that will bring tears to your eyes and an “Oh” as well.  This is the most all-inclusive guide book anyone can find that is readable and caring.  The book alone is a wonderful resource; Waichler advises each person to build a network of support for themselves and their parents.

Waichler’s writing is strong and concise in a down-to-earth style; she flows from one topic to another in an organized manner.  She is insightful, kind and generous in her sharing whether it leaves her in a positive light or not.  She speaks truthfully and thoroughly.  The last few weeks with my father was made clearer with reading this book.  There were so many things he did and said both before and during his illness that when he passed away my sister and I were left dumbfounded and hurt.  I am passing this book along to my sister to help her heal.

I wish I had read this book before, perhaps I would have understood things better with dad but with mom, I feel much more prepared.  Parents don’t live forever, prepare yourself so you can be a blessing to them.

WordsAPlenty proudly gives this book a five-star rating for its handling of sensitive material, as well as,  the depth and caring that this book demonstrates not only for the parents but for the adult children left behind.

Breastfeeding is a Bitch: But, We Do It Lovingly Anyway by Cassi Clark

January 9, 2017 Charla Review - Submitted

WordsAPlenty received this book in exchange for an honest review.  Cassi Clark is an Indie B.R.A.G. Medallion author.

Cassi Clark, author of Breastfeeding is a Bitch: But, We Lovingly Do It Anyway is a highly entertaining read that hits home for those of us who have been highly successful or tremendously utter failures at breastfeeding our newborn babies.  Breastfeeding is touted as the “right” thing to do for our children and many mothers look forward to the bonding that is reported to happen during this very intimate act.

Reading this book brought back my memories of when I had my children and my failed attempts to breastfeed.  This is a book that any woman who has, is or thinking about breastfeeding should read in order to no lose sleep, question her sanity or feel like a milk machine.

“Nights were the worst.  Fighting with a screaming, starving baby in the middle of the night is enough to drive the sanest person to a breakdown.  It felt as if the Best Husband Ever got to cuddle my baby, while I nursed a machine.”

Clark talks about her the ins and outs of birthing, breastfeeding and the emotional ups and downs of a new mother.  While she uses humor and tongue in cheek descriptions and situations, they are all too real.  Clark touches on all the inner thoughts and questions new mothers ask themselves when breastfeeding and provides powerful insight into the minds of mothers who are sleep deprived, nipple sore and mentally exhausted.

When I had my children, there were no classes per se on breastfeeding.  For my first child I was not interested as I had to work and couldn’t be bothered with pumping.  When I had my second child, I was breastfeeding period.  I experienced the same emotions, thoughts and fears that Clark expresses in her book.  My doctor was no help and finally, after having my left breast swell up to the size of a watermelon and turn apple red (bag balm for cows is the perfect remedy) I quit.   After reading this book, even though it is written with humor and a tongue-in-cheek style, it is all too true!  At every baby shower I attend from this point on, the mom-to-be is getting a copy of this book!

Clark’s writing style was smooth, down-home and connected with the readers in a personal manner.  She has shared her wisdom and knowledge in a fun yet poignant manner.  She touched on everything a new mom feels and experiences with humor and a realism that will help many recognize they are not going crazy nor are they unfeeling/unloving mothers.  They are not flawed; they are not imperfect – they are mothers struggling to provide their children with everything they can through personal sacrifice and the nurturing nature of women.

This is a must read and will definitely put a smile on your face!

WordsAPlenty awards this book with a strong five star rating for its unique and loving handling of a natural process.
