Button Nose: The Sad Little Bear by Gina LoBiondo

February 25, 2021 Charla Review - Submitted

This is a short, yet powerful tale told from a toy’s perspective.  Button Nose was loved by his little girl but as with all little girls, she grew up and neglected the bear. As mom’s are want to do, she cleared out some toys thus starting Button Nose on an adventure.  Button Nose finds many different owners who just do not measure up to the Little Girl and his sadness grows from the lack of love and attention.  His adventure soon ends with a delightful ending that will bring tears to your eyes.

I have three grandchildren under the age of 5 and they visited with me last night.  I read this book to them and they LOVED it!  My granddaughter informed her mother NOT to touch any of her toys!

The story flowed smoothly and with ease that children could follow. The style in which the author, Gina LoBiondo writes is fluid and allows her readers to engage with the characters.  The two boys enjoyed the book as well.  I only had to read it to them three times!

The illustrations by Brittany Widler were well done, and the children loved them as well.  Not too many pictures and they are done in a manner that is attractive to the children – simple yet rich in detail and impactful.

Cinderella – A Love Story by Gina LoBiondo

February 25, 2021 Charla Review - Submitted

We all know the story of Cinderella, but the author Gina LoBiondo gives it a nice twist.  It is a love story with several different levels – the love of a daughter for her mother, father, and her true love.  While Ella is given the gift of attending the ball, it is not with the typical “fairy god-mother” but rather another that she holds dear to her heart.  LoBiondo includes others in the plan to unite Ella and Prince Andrew making the story unique and engaging.

LoBiondo plays on the established stereotypical behavior of each character but puts a slight twist on it.  While the stepmother is still a vile and evil woman, we see the sisters slightly different by the end of the book.

This is a very short book, but LoBiondo effectively weaves in the twists and gives her audience a different view of Ella.  While this still has a happy ending, it has far more depth than most.

The illustrations by Donna Sterpe are well done and appropriate for the age group, however, this story can be enjoyed by all ages.  LoBiondo gives her audience a fresh look into the Cinderella story.
