This is a novel about the life of Sally, a woman born into slavery and who struggled and faced so much opposition because of her skin color. Yet, she maintained a peaceful, good and forgiving demeanor throughout her life. Through journals of Sally’s family and rare opportunities to connect with folks who knew Sally or had heard of her, the author brought Sally to life.
Sally’s life from the moment of birth to her death is recounted in a creative and powerful manner. We see her struggles and those around her.
I cannot imagine the amount of work and research that went into this book. The dialog was authentic for the time and situation. J. Schlenker carefully wove truth and fiction together to create a captivating story that should and needs to be read. The gritty truth of slavery and people’s actions and beliefs speak loudly in this book. Sally would have been a wonderful person to know.
I finished this book almost a week ago and it has taken me this long to absorb the content and message. This is not a book that one can read and quickly jump into another one. It is haunting in its subject matter and the characters that Schlenker successfully brought to life, solidifying a connection to the readers.
Schlenker’s research and ability to weave the story while dealing with a difficult and sensitive subject was well done. I would recommend this book highly to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
