Cougars at the Beach: A Mickke D Grand Strand Murder Mystery by Steve McMillen is an excellent mystery thriller! Mickke D is a part-time private eye, salvage operator and real estate agent who is also ex-military. Life on Myrtle Beach should be relaxing and calm but for Mickke D it is anything but … cougars on the prowl, a serial killer is on the loose, salvage thieves are planning their moves and then there’s the drug cartel … all of them have a bone to pick with Mickke D!
Action packed adventure and plots with twists that will make you gasp. McMillen does an excellent job of keeping the plots straight and adding just the right amount of twists to keep the reader connected and enthralled. All the characters are well developed and grounded deeply in the story. Each character is vividly described not only through descriptions but through their dialog.
Once in bed my demons begin to move around and I can’t get to sleep. i thought my trip to Colombia had been my last hunting trip but it looks like I have to make one more trip back into my demon-filled world. However, this time I will be going alone and I will tell no one where and when I am going. I think I know where … is hiding out.
This novel has several strong characters, none are weak as they each play a significant role in the plot. McMillen uses each character’s point of view to describe their involvement. Very well written in this style, it is an easy read as it flows smoothly.
I was very pleasantly surprised that Mickke D was down to earth and real. When his human side is shown, he is even more realistic. Each character was needed in the story and each character was solidly built and realistic. I was pleasantly surprised as I expected Mickke D to be a stereotypical seedy Mickey Spillane type of character – he is so much better than that! When Mickke D displays his comedic side, one cannot help but laugh and shake their head.
This is a book that mystery and thriller readers will not want to miss. I cannot wait to read his next book!
